The Legon Centre for Education Research and Policy (LECERP), University of Ghana, in collaboration with eight (8) other institutions from Africa and Europe, has been awarded a €1 million research grant to support the transformation of higher education in Ghana and other African countries. The grant is funded under the European Union’s ERASMUS+ Programme and will be administered by the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA).

The grant will facilitate the implementation of a project titled: “Transitioning Higher Education Regulators and Universities to Competence-Based Education in East and West Africa.”

The project, under the acronym TRUCE, will be implemented by a consortium of nine (9) partner institutions, namely: LECERP–University of Ghana; Makerere University; Mountains of the Moon University; University of Education, Winneba; University of Barcelona; Pedagogical Institute of Portugal; Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC); National Council for Higher Education, Uganda; and the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM).

The project seeks to strengthen the capacity of higher education institutions to effectively adopt Competence-Based Education (CBE), develop industry-responsive curricula and assessment protocols that align academic training with labour market needs, and support faculty and higher education regulators in delivering CBE-focused services across institutions in Africa.

The project, led by Dr. Clement Adamba, Director of LECERP, is coordinated by Dr. Joyce Senya Ama Anku of the Department of Teacher Education. Reflecting on the prospects of the grant, Dr. Adamba described the award as both timely and strategic for Ghana. He noted that the initiative aligns with the Ministry of Education’s transformative agenda to transition university education to a competence-based model, particularly in anticipation of students currently being trained under the competence-based curriculum at the Senior High School level. The project also aligns closely with the University of Ghana’s strategic priority of delivering a transformative student experience, through its emphasis on competence-based teaching and learning that enhances student readiness, relevance, and employability.
