LECERP trains teachers in Asuogyaman district to boost ICT integration in classrooms

The Legon Centre for Education Research and Policy (LECERP) has organized a tailored training session on integrating ICT into teaching and learning for teachers from Boso Senior High Technical School and Apeguso Senior High School. The training, held from 1st to 2nd September 2025, formed part of activities under the Leveraging Internet Access for Teacher Professional Development (LIATPD) Project.

The LIATPD initiative, launched in October 2024 at the University of Ghana, is a collaboration between LECERP and the Internet Society Foundation (ISOC). It aims to strengthen ICT use in education across five Senior High Schools in the Asuogyaman District namely; Boso Senior High Technical School, Apeguso, Akwamuman, Adjena, and Anum Senior High Schools.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Hayford Mensah Ayerakwa, Principal Investigator of the project, explained that the programme seeks to enhance teachers’ digital literacy, personal development, and improve internet connectivity in schools through the provision of computers, high-speed routers and boosters. He emphasized that ICT skills are critical for preparing students to acquire 21st-century competencies such as critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity and innovation, communication and the right cultural identity.

In a presentation focused on ICT integration, Dr. Gideon Anapey, a Resource person demonstrated how teachers can apply digital tools in line with the new SHS curriculum. He highlighted the importance of learner-centred pedagogy and web-based tools as well as key elements in engaging online learners. He guided participants through a hands-on use of digital tools in the classrom. These tools included Microsoft Word, Google Sheets, AI-powered test item generators, and STEM platforms like Khan Academy. Further, he explained the need for teachers to consider learners’ psychological and emotional needs when applying digital tools in lesson planning.

Dr. Emmanuel Adjei-Boateng, a Resource person delivered a presentation on the new SHS curriculum and the resources available to support them to effectively implement it in teaching and learning. He provided an overview of its philosophy, vision, goals, and objectives, stressing that understanding the broader vision of SHS education in Ghana is critical to the successful implementation of the curriculum.

In another session, Prof. Kwaku Darko Amponsah, a Resource person guided teachers through the processes of developing a detailed lesson plan. He outlined strategies for incorporating 21st Century core competencies, gender equity and social inclusion, and socio-emotional learning in lesson development and delivery.

In brief remarks, the Headmaster of Boso SHTS, Mr. Prince Henry, and the Headmistress of Apeguso SHS, Mrs. Victoria Asabea Badoo, expressed appreciation to the project team. They described the initiative as timely for teacher professional development. They were hopeful that the project would be sustained by the teachers and transferred to learners to enhance their learning process.

The training sessions culminated with the election of Internet Change Champions (ICC) in each school who will spearhead the initiative and support their colleagues in the effective application of these digital tools in the classrooms.

LECERP has scheduled training sessions later this year for the remaining three schools-Akwamuman SHS, Adjena SHS, and Anum SHS.
