Dr. Freda Osei Sefa, a Research Fellow at the Legon Centre for Education Research and Policy (LECERP), has been awarded a Collaborative Research Grant under the College of Education Research Fund to undertake a study on AI awareness and usage for teaching and learning with at the basic education level in urban Accra. . The aim is to unpack the capacity and readiness of basic school teachers to integrate AI and other innovative digital technologies into their teaching practices.

While AI is increasingly being integrated into educational systems globally, its adoption in Ghana faces significant challenges. Many teachers express anxiety about new technologies, exhibit limited knowledge of AI applications, and often prefer to rely on traditional teaching methods. This study, therefore, seeks to examine teachers’ perceptions, understanding, and preparedness to adopt AI tools in support of classroom instruction.

The study will focus on basic schools within the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. A key component of the research is stakeholder engagement, involving policymakers and education sector leaders to ensure that the findings inform strategic decisions and capacity-building initiatives.

Expected outcomes include identifying the training and support needs of teachers to effectively utilize AI tools, assessing their overall awareness and perceptions of AI, and providing practical recommendations for integrating AI into basic education. Ultimately, the study aims to contribute to building a more innovative and future-ready educational system in Ghana.

The other research team members are Dr. Martin Agyekum, and Dr. Innocent Agbelie, all Research Fellows at the Legon Centre for Education Research and Policy (LECERP). The team is working under the mentorship of Dr. Clement Adamba, Director of the Centre.
